Pirlo Autobiography

“I have dealt with many Coaches in my career, but Conte is the one who surprised me the most. He needed just one speech, with many simple words, to conquer both me and Juventus.

We arrived together on the Planet Juventus. “He presented himself to us on the first day of pre-season training in the gym at Bardonecchia. He already had fire running through his veins and moved like a viper. ‘This squad, dear lads, is coming off two consecutive seventh-place finishes. It’s crazy. Shocking. I am not here for this, so it’s time to stop being crap.’

“If Arrigo Sacchi was a genius, then what is he? I expected him to be great, but not that great. I thought of a Coach with a lot of grit and charisma, but instead I discovered he has much to teach his colleagues in terms of tactics and technique.

“Going back, there is one thing I wouldn’t do again – choose the locker right next to Gigi Buffon at the Juventus Stadium, the one in front of the door,” wrote Pirlo.
“It is the most dangerous spot in Turin, especially at half-time. Conte storms in and – even when we are winning – throws anything he can get his hands on towards the wall, which is my spot. He’ll throw anything he can find, almost always plastic bottles full of water. Very fizzy water.
“He becomes a beast and is never happy, as there is always some detail that isn’t perfect and he can see in advance what could happen over the next 45 minutes.
“One time we were losing to Milan and he couldn’t get over it. ‘Against them! I can’t understand how we can’t be beating them! They even play badly.’”

10 facts about Manchester United transfer target Claudio Marchisio

Manchester United are being linked with a move for Italian international Claudio Marchisio today.

United first registered an interest in the versatile midfielder back in 2010 but since then he has cemented his place as a regular member of the Old Lady first team but is thought to be unsettled at the recent tactical rejig at the club under Antonio Conte.

But what can we tell you about this 27-year-old midfielder?

Here are ten facts about Claudio Marchisio.

1) Marchisio is every bit an avid Bianconeri fan. Growing up in a family of Juve supporters he was a ball-boy at the Delle Alpi stadium.

2) He was first called up into the Juventus first team to train as a teenager by former England manager Fabio Capello.

3) It was the Calciopoli match-fixing scandal that gave him first big opportunity. With Juventus relegated to Serie B he was given a starting role in the side under Dider Deschamps.

4) After promotion he was loaned out to Empoli along with Sebastian Giovinco in order to gain vital first-team football.

5) He finally scored his first goal for the club upon his return to Juventus with a match winner against Fiorentina; five days after his 23rd birthday.

6) He was voted Juventus’ Player of the Year in 2009.

7) Marchisio first captained his beloved Juve in the Europa league tie with Fulham in 2010.

8) He was named in the Serie A team of the year in both 2011 and 2012.

9) He made his national team debut for Italy in 2009 under Marcelo Lippi and has since gone on to play 32 games for the Azzurri and bag one goal against Serbia in 2011.

10) Interestingly it is a former Manchester United player that may be the reason behind his apparent desire to leave. Conte has changed the formation in order to accommodate Frenchman Paul Pogba which has reportedly left Marchisio disconcerted.

The Italian international returned to Turin in the summer after spending the previous two campaigns at Parma.

Although Giovinco has featured heavily – he’s scored 11 goals in 40 games this term – he hasn’t totally convinced which has led to rumours that he could be used as a transfer pawn this summer.

“The idea that he could be offered to another club in a player plus cash deal is just a rumour,” Andrea D’Amico told Sport Italia.

“Giovinco was strongly wanted by boss Antonio Conte. Any decision made by the club will be made in agreement with the Coach.

“Offering him in exchange for another player would go against the wishes of Conte who wanted him and who considers him as an important element.”

It cost Juventus €11m to sign Parma’s 50 per cent stake in Giovinco last summer.

Pirlo agreed Chelsea switch, but…

Andrea Pirlo says he was close to joining Chelsea in the past, but the move was blocked by Milan chief Silvio Berlusconi.

The 33-year-old, now at Juventus, made the revelation in an interview with Sky Sport Italia where he also spoke of interest from Real Madrid.

“I think that I was close to a move to Chelsea and Real,” he noted. “I had already agreed terms with the London club, but then Berlusconi intervened and I remained at Milan.”

The playmaker spent a decade with the Diavolo until he joined Juve in 2011 on a free transfer once his contract had expired.

“I have no kind of regrets about leaving Milan,” he continued. “I needed a change and the best thing was to go and play somewhere else.

“It was also a good decision by the Rossoneri too seeing as they got other players in my role. I’m happy that I accepted a Juve move.”

Pirlo is coming towards the end of his career, but he has admitted that he could choose to remain in the game thanks to boss Antonio Conte.

“He’s surprised me on a tactical level and the way he works on a daily basis, I’ve learned a lot from him.

“I previously didn’t want to become a Coach, but I could decide to now because of what he has taught me.”

Pirlo will collect his second successive Scudetto in Turin if Juve get a point against Palermo on Sunday.

Juventus, unbeaten in their new formation

After their thrashing in Europe, the league leaders have replied with three consecutive victories against Lazio, AC Milan and Torino. Conte took off a striker and pushed Pogba into the centre to back up Marchisio and Vidal who have scored four in the last three games.

Arturo Vidal, with 14 goals this season is the Bianconeri's top goalscorer. Ansa
Three matches and three victories was Juve's response to their routing by Bayern Munich in the Champions League. But these weren't just three ordinary matches. They faced Lazio in Rome, AC Milan, and finally Torino in yesterday's derby at the Stadio Olimpico. The table-toppers showed they had their heads squarely on their shoulders and were prepared to deal with excess euphoria, or disappointment. They were balanced on the pitch as well as off it, with Conte watching on, ready to punish.

FORMATION CHANGE — But there's more to it than that. On the final run in to the title, Conte has changed the style of the Old Lady. It might be the spring air moving in(even if it poured down yesterday at the Stadio Olimpico), but he has replaced a striker with a cool midfielder in Pogba. Vucinic is alone up front now, being helped out by midfielders in attack. Warning to all: opponents might never score again. Conte didn't say this, but it was there to be seen. Buffon was barely troubled on just two occasions by Candreva and Ciani. He was more or less another spectator during the AC Milan game and in the derby he was called into action once to deal with a great shot from Santana. The bare minimum a keeper should have to do really. Because their midfield was bolstered and the best defence in the league was being carefully covered, Juve's goal was as safe as Fort Knox. Goals weren't hard to come by either: the midfield took care of that, which has come to be expected in these two years since Conte has been at the helm.

VIDAL THE CENTRE-FORWARD — Vidal in particular has shown his scoring ability. A brace against Lazio, the first from a penalty and the second from inside the area. He scored the winner against AC Milan, once again from a penalty and then the rocket in the derby, which Marchisio (who is actually from Turin) added to, bringing his tally against Torino to three in both league games this season. And now the title is coming within reach with one point still to be picked up and four games to do it in.

Man United Ready to Pounce as ‘Italian Scholes’ Linked With Juventus Exit

Old Trafford side given green light to challenge for long term target.

Sir Alex Ferguson has been linked with interest in goal-scoring midfielder Claudio Marchisio for quite some time and Click Manchester reports that the Scot may be ready to make an offer with speculation rife that Juventus could be set to consider offers for the Italian international.

Gazzetta dello Sport believe Antonio Conte is set for a busy summer and is set to sacrifice Marchisio to help boost his transfer fund kitty and having publicly stated that Chilean midfielder Arturo Vidal is going nowhere there appears to be a possibility that locally born Marchisio may be a player he is willing to sell.

Real Madrid, PSG and Bayern Munich are also said to be interested in the playmaker, who could be considered as the ideal man to replace Paul Scholes in the Old Trafford midfield.

Ferguson lacks a goal-scoring option among his complement of central midfielders and could well do with a player in the mould of the younger Scholes, who had for years been on hand to provide a dozen plus goals a season, offering much needed support to his strike-force and on hand to ably link midfield and attack.

Marchisio is into his eighth season at Juventus and may be open to a new challenge and Ferguson is said to have a hefty transfer war-chest available with which to invest in the box to box midfielder this summer.

Man United could elect to use unwanted players into the bargain, with winger Nani said to be a player Conte would like to bring to Juventus.

JUVENTUS, Marchisio speaks of derby day delight

Claudio Marchisio was all smiles after maintaining his Derby della Mole goalscoring form with a stoppage time strike in this afternoon’s 2-0 victory over Torino at the Stadio Olimpico.

The midfielder, whose 92nd minute strike made it three in two games against the Granata, believes the Bianconeri’s character played a crucial role in shattering the hosts’ resolve.

The 27-year-old said: “It was a similar game to this season’s first encounter. We also had difficulty in breaking the deadlock at Juventus Stadium. It was the same again today, but then we managed to score and claim the points, showing great character.”

Turin-born Claudio, who again impressed in a free role behind lone striker Mirko Vucinic, moved on to consider the prospect of clinching the Scudetto title in front of a capacity crowd at Juventus Stadium next Sunday.

“Aside from the goal, I’m happy about the victory which takes us to within a whisker of lifting the title. We’ve now got the opportunity to celebrate the Scudetto with our fans at home, even though we’ll be up against a Palermo side fighting for survival.”
